The Queens of Mazatlán’s 2014 Carnaval were chosen at the Angela Peralta over the weekend, but not without controversy.

Lorena Lizárraga, a 24-year old graduate of the Universidad Panamericana in Guadalajara in the Department of Communication and Public Relations will wear the Queen of Carnaval crown this year and Marcela Valdez, an 18-year-old student in her second semester studying Education Intervention at the Universidad Pedagógica del Estado de Sinaloa will reign as Queen of the Floral Games.

Media reported that the election of the two young Mazatlecans will pass into history as one of the most controversial, honouring the popular Mazatlán saying “If there is no fuss, there is no Carnaval.”

The fuss began when a fault in electronics resulted in confusion in the judges´ count. When notary José Manuel Magallón took the stage to explain, the fans and families attending began to yell “fraud, explain.”

As tension mounted, Magallón assured the audience that the problem did not change the numbers and asked judges to raise their vote cards, calming the audience.

Halfway through the contest, Mizarahí Shobert and Fernanda Tirado were the public´s favourites, but all changed with the question and answer segment.

In response to the question “What is your motive for participating in Carnaval?” Lorena Lizárraga received the most applause when she replied it had been a dream since a child when her mother took her to Carnaval parades and if she won, she would dedicate the win to her mother.

To the question “What does the family signify to you?” media reported Marcela Valdez´ reply was clear and extensive, similar to other candidates.

Lidia Rojas, Queen of the Floral Games last year, placed the Queens´ sashes on the winners.
