Speaking at the national tour agents fair in Cancún yesterday Pablo Castro, Mexican director of Expedia.com, said Mazatlán is a destination which registered an historic increase of 200 percent in tourism during 2013, putting it among the top ten destinations in Mexico.
He cited three reasons influencing the upswing: the world economy, improved security and the successful promotion strategy of Mazatlán hotels.
Among hotels that saw a welcome increase in business, Castro mentioned the Riu, Pueblo Bonito and El Cid as well as small, medium and large hotels in Culiacán.
Nationally, Veracruz, Mexico City and Guadalajara increased their tourism by 150 to 200 percent in 2013, he added.
In the case of Mazatlán, he was surprised to find it in a recuperation stage to the point where it is now among the top ten tourist destinations in the country. Americans, Canadians and national visitors make up the majority of tourists visiting the port.
Three new international markets are opening for Sinaloa, he reported, with travel agents from China, Colombia and Europe showing an interest in providing package tours beginning the end of this year and into 2015.
Gabriel Badillo, director of the Premier travel agency specializing in promoting Mexican destinations internationally, advised Chinese tourists are particularly interested in travelling to the Copper Canyon whereas Colombian and European agencies have been liaising with Mazatlán hotels to provide packages for their clients.
At the well attended annual travel agents fair, the Sinaloa Secretary of Tourism and municipal Mayors presented a seminar on Sinaloa´s three Pueblos Mágicos offering a video showcasing Cosalá, El Rosario and El Fuerte.
