US Consul General John Tavenner, with Mazatlán Consul Luis Ramirez, visited Mayor Felton yesterday.
On a visit to Mazatlán yesterday the Consul General of the United States in Hermosillo, John Tavenner, told reporters that a travel alert advising caution when visiting Mazatlán has been in place for the past three years, but the situation has improved and the alert has been lifted.
For the rest of Sinaloa, alerts remain in place. The situation is reviewed by the American State Department every six months, said Tavenner, as things do change.
Tavenner, the Consul General in Hermosillo since 2011, will leave his post in July this year and was in Mazatlán for a routine visit to meet with Mazatlán Mayor Carlos Felton for the last time before leaving his post.
Tourists have a good impression of Mazatlán, he said, which is why they are visiting the port. As well, the cruise ships are returning having seen the improvements which the local government has made a priority. The situation in the port has changed and his office has been receiving good comments about the city, he pointed out.
The Consul General said his office estimates approximately 10,000 Americans live in Sinaloa part or full-time. (from Noroeste)
